The Korean education system consists of 6 years of elementary school, 3 years of middle school, 3 years of high school, and 4 years of university. The 9 years from elementary school to middle school are compulsory education. After graduating from high school, students take the College Scholastic Ability Test to enter university.
As an independent nation, full-scale modern education began after liberation, and the Education Council established under the US military government adopted the combined 6-3-3-4 and 6-6-4 systems, which were implemented starting in 1946. With the establishment of the government in 1948, the Education Act was enacted in 1949, and the school system was changed to the 6-4-3-4 and 6-4-2-4 systems, but was changed to the 6-4-3-4 system in 1950. However, the 6-3-3-4 system was established in 1951 through the revision of the Education Act without even being implemented, and it continues to this day.
Discussions on reforming the school system have been ongoing for the reason that it is necessary to reflect the speed of students' growth and development, respond to rapid social changes and changes in the future environment, and prepare for low birth rates and an aging population, but reforming the school system has not been carried out due to the complex issues involved and the difficulty of guaranteeing the same effect compared to the opportunity cost.
